An Interview with Dawn Myers, Guided Leadership Solutions - The Mindset Shifts That Business Owners Need To Make

We all have a natural tendency to resist change. This is especially true when it comes to our business and professional lives. For those who are entrepreneurs, we get our ideas, start our businesses and then figure out the rest as we go along. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but it can be limiting if you don't have a long-term plan in mind. There are certain mindsets that every successful entrepreneur needs to cultivate for their business to grow beyond their wildest dreams. In this episode, we are joined by Dawn Myers, the Co-Founder of Guided Leadership Solutions, a company that helps small business owners get back to doing what they do best by freeing them up to focus on what matters most.

Dawn talks about the mindset shifts she needed to make to get where she is today, the big misconception about business and how you can build a positive mindset. What advice do you have for someone just starting out?

Start messy - you don't have to have it all figured out. The details will fall into place along the journey.

What is your definition of success?

Being present in all things - self, family, relationships, work.

How do you stay motivated? Do you have a routine for staying positive? If so, can you share it?

I typically stay easily motivated because I can see the impact of what I am doing. Reminding myself of that keeps me going, even when it is difficult.

What's the one thing you wish someone would have told you when you started your business?

You don't have to have it all figured out. Stay focused on the goal and it will all come together.

What books, videos, etc. do you recommend for others?

So many - The Big Leap, E-Myth, Atomic Habits...I am continually listening to books.

Do you have a routine you follow that you believe helps you be successful? If so, what is it?

I start my day with worship and that keeps me centered and able to tackle whatever comes my way.

  • Practice Generosity to Overcome a Scarcity Mindset:
I had to work through my scarcity mindset to take the leap to entrepreneur. Growing up poor and later working my way up the corporate ladder, I clung to the security that a steady paycheck and benefits provided. Letting go of that weekly deposit into my bank account has allowed me to invest in my own business, where I enjoy the fruits of my labor.
The future is up to me, and while that can still be scary, I have learned that if you practice generosity, it will come back to you (just like all things in life).

  • One of the biggest gaps we are seeing in the workforce right now is businesses (owners and leaders) not giving employees autonomy. Some demanding employees to come back in the office to feel a greater sense of control. The great resignation forced employers to increase wages but they aren’t naturally willing to let go of control and allow their people to make mistakes.
Leading through relationships rather than authority is the way to overcome the fear of letting go. Employers must get to know, like, trust their employees and allow them to do the same. Empathy leads to the development of positive relationships and organizational cultures, as well as the achievement of desired outcomes. Although empathy is not a new skill, its importance has increased in recent years, new research demonstrates how empathy is the leadership competency that must be developed and demonstrated, now and in the future, of the work environment.
